Wife of late photographer Eugene Smith arrested in Japan over blackmail

Aileen Mioko Smith, wife of the late famous photographer W. Eugene Smith, have been arrested along with her 21-year-old daughter and a third suspect, police said.

The three were arrested on suspicion of injuring and attempting to blackmail a 27-year-old man.

Investigators said Smith, 55, and the other suspects called the 27-year-old man to a residence in Miyazaki at the end of July, demanded several million yen from him and hit him in the face, leaving him with light injuries. The three have denied the allegations against them, police said.

In April 1999, the man was arrested with three acquaintances for committing a crime against Smith's daughter, but after they reached an out-of-court settlement, the daughter dropped the complaint and they were not charged.

However, at the end of July, Smith and the other suspects called the man and two other acquaintances to a residence one by one and threatened them, ordering him to hand over money for psychologically damaging Smith's daughter, police said.

Smith, who has U.S. nationality, is known for her photojournalism relating to Minamata disease. She leads the anti-nuclear group "Green Action."

What use is having a great depth of field, if there is not an adequate depth of feeling?
